I don't think it signifies anything other than pussy cat loveliness :-)

I should point out that my boy cat is black, so it usually means he's following me to the shops. Which happens a lot.

Vienna crosses my path regularly - he is usually running away.

That he's trying to trip me up because I don't give him wet food any more?

It usually signifies that none of the other four cats should try crossing my path at the same time unless they want a slap from Bess.

edited to use Bess icon.

It's bad luck if it's a panther.

Not necessarily. If it's crossing your path it's probably after something else.

Although my intellect sternly informs me that any superstition is a load of old twaddle (but perhaps with interesting origins), my heart always gives a little happy skip if a black cat crosses my path. It also slumps anxiously if I spot a single magpie. And don't get me started on ladders or the number thirteen...

Oh, I am odd about magpies too, I really can't reason my way out of it either!

I think it's partly because magpies are strangely compelling in their own right: beautiful yet somehow sinister, they seem to possess a stronger 'character' than most birds.

They also make a bloody awful racket.

Magpies used to be my one illogical nod to supersticions ... But as its a matter of learned habit and playing on fear I rewrote the rhyme to all be good (one takes my sorrow ... And such) and now I don't even notice them.

Good luck - but purly as it's extra secret kitten love and we don't need to tell my own girls about it

Heh, my path is frequently crossed by a black cat, usually meaning 'feed me', 'pet me' or 'play with me'. I like to think I'm quite lucky that he has chosen me for this honour, but possibly not exceptionally so ;-)

I grew up with two black cats so I've always considered them very good luck.
